Cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) often referred to as ‘wonder nut’, is one of the most valuable processed nuts traded on the global commodity markets and is also an important cash crop.
Cashew is grown along coastal states of Maharashtra, Goa, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa & West Bengal. Traditionally all cashew processing industry was located close to these plantations.
India has one of the highest Plantation areas for Raw Cashew Nuts in the world but still its domestic crop is not enough to meet its processing capacity. Against a processing capacity of about 2 million tonnes, India produces a crop of only 600,000- 700,000 tonnes.
Therefore, India is highly dependent on imports for meeting its processing capacity. India imports Raw cashew Nuts from a number of countries in west Africa like Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Guinea Bissau, Gambia, Burkina Faso, Senagal, Tanzania & Indonesia.
The Cashew Processing Industry of India comprises of both organized and un-organised processors. While, organized players have their purchase set-up in these countries, un-organized players rely on Exporters or Indian Distributors for their Raw Cashew Nuts as holding costs are quite a burden for these small processors.
